Ray,
It is my political view that the mess we call a "justice system" is a complete mess. Remember that I live in Illinois where 14 of 28 persons sentenced to death were later found to be innocent. The only reason we do not have the 'distinction' of killing two innocents is a literally last minute intervention by a Federal court.
We also have a former (decorated and promoted) detective under indictment for torturing confessions out of suspects.
Then there is California with its completely unjust "three strikes and you are out" law which in fact is so draconian that a person can get life for one minor property theft. Before they went nuttier than usual out there, 1 of every 5 jobs in California government was in education, now 1 in 5 is in prisons.
Texas were it a country, would rank third to the US and China in executions. Its so called pardon and parole system has an unbroken record of not pardoning anyone.
In Illinois we actually have a law prohibiting convicts from getting college educations while incarcerated from any public school. That is not justice it is persecution. It certainly is not 'rehabilitation!'
I could go on, but I think I shall let it rest.
FWIW
