A very long time ago when I was a student at Loyola University of Chicago (think they had one computer and were proud that they did -- that long ago) there was a priest who would begin his intro to theology class for RC Freshmen (we heretical types got a different class) with, "OK, this is a class in Roman Catholic theology. That is, I want you to forget all the crap Sister Mary Goodshoes taught you in 3rd grade, we are going to study Roman Catholic Theology." ( I loved Fr. K.)
He had a great point. RC theology is a lot like the US Constitution. Everyone knows a lot about what is in it except it isn't.
I suppose almost everyone (Episcopalians do not officially) has the idea that they are completely and uniquely 'right.' As such getting into the 'right' church is a marker of salvation. Rome has made that a canonical principal so that if one is in an excommunicated or non-communicated (these are different) body, then one's status is at least doubtful.
Actually that is not all that far from where many "protestants" live. Ask a Baptist if a Lutheran or Catholic is 'saved.'
Etymology Department: The word "protestant" arose as a descriptive of those who were protesting RC dogma (it was never doctrine) about sanctity, indulgences and papal authority to dispense. In short the Lutherans and Calvinists 400 and change years ago. Applying it to say Pentecostals who simply did not exist is a stretch.
FWIW
