Some of the deepest reflections on prayer that have influenced my life were written in the early twentieth century by Baron Frederick von Hugel and Evelyn Underhill. He was a Roman Catholic layman and she an Anglican mystic. For several years he was her spiritual adviser. Among his comments to her was the statement that the least important thing in prayer is what one says to God.
