It may be true that the top 5% of families as ranked by income pay 50% of the income taxes or it may just be propaganda spread around by wealthy people. The way the system is set up it is not easy for people to know whether that's true or not. If it is true then I think that people ought to be aware of that. It might also be true that some fraction of the top 5% pays little in the way of income taxes.
