I don't like the current system mostly because it is so complicated and subject to manipulation and abuse. I don't have a problem with income tax purr se but do question the graduated tax for the same reasons that you state. I don't think that taxes are in themselves are a moral issue. When they perpetrate abuse of man or the rest of creation then there is a moral issue for those who impose them.
