I doubt there is anything much that can be associated with "protestantism." Last I knew, there were well over 2,500 different non-catholic faith communities in what passes for American Christendom. So, any general statement is almost of necessity meaningless.
I think the sort of 'right faith' approach you are talking about is certainly out there and I don't know the answer to the excommunication question.
Until the evangelicals got ahold of it and forced the 39 articles on the Anglican community, the Anglican idea was that the church was about orthopraxis. In a sense that is what part of the current arguement is over, correct belief v. correct practice.
