The Boulevard cruisers get good reviews. I have never ridden one.
I think you should shop a bit -- go to a Suzuki dealer, a Kawasaki dealer, a Yamaha dealer and see what feels good and prices in your range.
If I had to list my two dream bikes, they would be the Kawasaki Connie and the Suzuki V-Strom. Both companies make fine rides. Those are on the sport--touring side of the street so cruiser/street is not something I look at except to admire a well done custom.
You cannot go wrong with anything by Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda or Yamaha. The market is very competitive, and they are very much in the business of delivering what the riders want. A Honda Goldwing owner made news recently by taking his bike in for a 250,000 mile check up! My hawk has 120,000 on it, and I know of others in that range from the other two companies.
