When someone, like for instance our host here, starts a board, they have to cover the expenses. The hosting companies have 'baskets' of what they think of as 'appropriate' advertisers. Sometimes, the oddest things get tossed into 'appropriate.'
So, I suppose the Scientology ad made an appearance. It would be unwise to conclude anything other than the person assigning ads to various categories is tone deaf.
Jesse is indeed a for real Christian person. Most of the rest of the readership and regular posters here are somewhere in the vicinity of 'orthodox' albeit I and a few others are outliers. 
We range from so low church they can't get high enough to kneel to some serious Anglo-Catholics in all sorts of 'flavors.' It makes for an interesting set of conversations, and Jesse has managed to keep us in a generally civil space. Here anathemas and the like are not usually seen.
