I recently acquired a copy of LifeWay Worship’s The Worship Hymnal (2008). It is an eclectic collection of traditional hymns, gospel songs, and spirituals and hymns and worship songs of more recent origin. It was released early in August. In mid October Worship Tracks containing all 674 hymns and songs in this hymnal plus an Extended Collection of 301 additional hymn arrangements and worship songs will be available in MP3 split track format and CD split track format.
The following is taken or adapted from the LifeWay Worship Project website.
“LifeWay Worship Music Group of LifeWay Christian Resources is embracing the challenge of meeting the worship needs of churches by embarking on an innovative venture to couple an updated Baptist Hymnal with modern technology.
Dubbed The Worship Project, the endeavor consists of two components, the first being a downloadable audio hymn and worship song repository from which an updated, hardbound Baptist Hymnal will be drawn.”
“LifeWay Worship Music Group’s plan ‘is for an online hymnal with an initial collection of 1,000 recorded titles that will be available at the launch of the project in 2008.’” At least 100 songs will be added to the collection each year, making it "ultimately, the last hymnal anyone will need as we will constantly be updating the repository."
“At the heart of the project will be the second component, a worship planner available through an online portal at: http://www.lifewayworship.com.”;
Worship planners will be able to search for songs by theme, Scripture or topic. They will have everything they need to put together a complete worship experience. Most churches in the United States have “lean staffs and less than 100 members." The pastor is often the one who arranges everything. This project will be immensely helpful to the process of worship planning in small churches.
The Worship Project web site promises to be a perfect tool for small existing churches without musicians and for new church plants without ready access to music resources.
The Worship Project is not stylistically driven or geared to one size of ministry or location. It seeks to preserve the best of the church’s past hymnody, and at the same time to use technology to build a bridge to the best of today’s composers and song writers.
Identical in musical and scriptural makeup to the updated Baptist Hymnal, The Worship Hymnal(2008) will give churches of other denomination the opportunity to use this compilation in their ministry. They will be able to utilize the same LifeWay Worship resources available to Baptist churches.
