Were Sam & Mike native to Mayberry?

One thing I was never clear about - at one point in the series it was stated that Sam hadn't known Andy that long, but at another point it was stated that his farm had been in his family for generations. Had Sam inherited the farm and just recently moved there? That might explain why he and Mike didn't have southern accents (of course there were several characters on the show that didn't have southern accents, which seems odd).
