I really loved Christopher Penczak's statement that, to him, the core of shamanism was creating sacred space and time. When we can purify a bubble of space/time/matter/energy/mind as a conduit between the worlds, magic is not usually far behind. I can just see an old witch at a place where three roads met doing an incantation and some young people happen by, so she tells them to keep walking, so they nicknamed her, Hekate.
But, since the supernatural reinforcement of purpose works to reduce the intervention of randomness, I do have a strong suspicion that _hekate_ actually came from the Egyptian _HkA_. When it comes to commonality among cultures, the wizards and witches, as keepers of things exotic and rare, seem to hold the things most deeply shared. In a place where one finds temples, one can pretty much be sure that there were mages and healers active at that spot, centuries before.
