Witches
The Basics
Witches are creatures that are born with magical powers. Unlike vampires and shapeshifters, witches do not have any physical strength. Their power lies in their magic, and each witch is born with a connection to a specific type of magic called a primary power. Witches can also identify species by reading their energy, just as a vampire or shapeshifter can smell the difference between each species.
Witches are born witches; there is no way to become one. They have similar beliefs to Pagans and Wiccans, but they are not the same thing. Real Witches should not be mistaken for being human friendly, nature lovers or pacifist. Like all species they can have a variety of personalities.
Weaknesses
Witches can only be harmed by iron, fire and decapitation. They will heal wounds made by other materials slower than vampires and shapeshifters. Iron can also be used to block a witch's connection to their magic.
Aging
Witches age slightly slower from humans, and although they out live humans, they can eventually die from old age (100 being quite old for a witch). There is no shame in dying of old age for witches, and it is seen as a natural part of the cycle of life. They do not mourn natural death, they celebrate the life of the witch.
Children & Relationships
Witches have a slightly slower fertility rate than humans and a little faster the vampires. It is normal for a witch to have several siblings, or for there to be several generations of a family alive at one time. As children many witches are usually cherished by the members of their parents' Coven/s, as well as their own families. Although these are the norm for witches there will be some witches who had a different family life.
Witches have relationships with any species. Their similarities with humans makes it easier for them to be in a relationship with a human in comparison to other species. Like the other species a child can only be produced by two witches, and for this reason they tend to marry within their own species.
The Gods
Witches have similar beliefs to Pagans or Wiccans, and have a close connection with nature. They worship a pantheon of Gods, usually the Gods of their country. Witches in England believe in the Gods of the Celtic Pantheon.
Powers
During puberty a witch will come into their power, and will be trained by a family member to control and use their power. At first control will not come easy, but by their 18th birthday a witch will have learnt control. All witches can use their magic to perform spells, and they can use items such as candles, oils, colours, and crystals to bring more power to a spell.
Each witch inherits a power known as a primary power from their parents. The primary power of a witch comes naturally to them and it is the form of magic that they have the most power with. Some primary powers are more destructive in nature, and others are more passive. Each Coven accepts one witch with each primary power to form a balanced group. It is believed that the primary powers were given to the witches by the Gods to help them survive. Each power can be attributed to some method of survival once needed by the witches. With modern technology and medicine, the powers are no longer used for survival.
The primary powers are:
Alchemist: Witches with this power are experts in potions and elixirs of all kinds.
Animal Speaker: Witches with this power can communicate with animals, and can use animals to gather information. They cannot order or control animals though. They are also able to talk with shapeshifters when they are in animal form.
Charm Maker: Witches with this power have the ability to infuse a personal item, a crystal and jewellery with power. This turns the item into a charm, and charms can be infused with power to do different things. Examples are charms are protection, fertility, and to help a witch concentrate a specific power.
Clairvoyant: Witches with this power are powerful clairvoyants. They have visions while awake or in their dreams. When witches with this power use forms of divination they recieve exact/true information, and good guidance.
Earth Witch: Witches with this power have a strong connection with the earth. This means they can move earth masses, have a close affinity with plants and have fertility magics.
Empath: Witches with this power can read the emotions of people. Weak Empaths will only get vague flashes of emotion, while the strongest Empaths will be able to read more details about their emotional state.
Fire Witch: Witches with this power are able to manifest and manipulate fire. This means they can create fire out of nothing, and can fuel it without any conventional fuel.
Healer: Witches with this power are able to heal all species, including animals. There are different ways to heal, and the weakest healers can only stop bleeding and heal shallow wounds. The strongest healers can reconstruct organs and set broken bones. Healers need to touch the body to be able to heal, and more serious wounds can take a long time to heal.
Tracker: Witches with this power are able to track supernatural creatures. If a vampire uses it's powers on someone or a witches uses their magic, witches with this power can track their power back to it's owner.
Water Witch: Witches with this power can manifest or manipulate water. To be able to manifest water from nothing there needs to be moisture in the air. These witches can only affect water in it's liquid state, and have no power over gas, ice or any other form of liquid.
Weather Witch: Witches with this power can change the weather. This does not mean they can control the weather; they can only change the weather if the natural elements needed are already present. For example; they cannot make it snow in the middle of summer, it has to be cold.
Wind Witch: Witches with this power can manifest or manipulate the wind. The weakest Wind Witches can only create small breezes, while the more powerful can cause gale force winds.
Power does not come with age; knowledge does. A witch is born with a certain amount of power, and throughout their lives they will learn different ways to control and use their primary power. Witches cannot gain more power or lose more power, unless they use dark magic and steal it from another witch. It is not an easy spell to complete, and has it's limitations. It can be very dangerous, and it is not a spell tolerated by other witches. Leaching power is considered an offense by most witches, and the only way to stop the spell is to kill the caster.
Covens
When a witch turns 18 they must petition to join a Coven, or create their own Coven. There are 12 places in each Coven, one place for a witch with each primary power. Covens are named after a part of nature, usually a plant, animal, bird of constellation. Once joining a Coven was for life, and witches usually marry within the Coven. In recent years this has changed slightly and it has become customary for a witch to join a Coven in their youth and then another Coven later in life. They usually remain in the Second Coven for the rest of their life. This change in tradition can happen when a witch goes to University, and Covens established at Universities tend to change as students join and leave the University or area.
Each Coven is run by a leader that is voted in by the other members. The leader oversees the Coven and makes sure they are not harming another member or endangering the coven in any way. If the Coven is unhappy with how a leader is acting they can agree to have a revote. At least three Coven members must be able to provide evidence against the Coven leader before a revote will take place.
There is one Coven currently played in the RPG; the Iris Coven. The Coven was established a few hundred years ago and members of the Coven tend to be descendants of the original witches. This Coven very rarely accepts outsiders, prefering to have members that are family or friends of current members.
Interaction with other Species
Witches interact easily with vampires and shapeshifters, and Covens often offer their surfaces to help their fellow supernatural creatures. The witches know that physically they are the weaknest of the three species, and so they like to keep the vampires and shapeshifters on their side. Witches often help them by performing spells or healing them when they become injured.
