Hey, Oracle Folk;
I recently posted a comment on how insights left behind by Crowley can be put to better use, on another message board. I would like to share it with the class, so, here goes:

> I would like some clarification on what Crowley was all about. I have heard
him being spoken of as if he were the devil himself from some and a force for
good from others. Anyone who knows anything should feel free to chip in but I
remember Jack mentioning Crowley a couple of years back and someone angrily
denouncing him as a satanist.

Hi;
Crowley was a mystic poet who inherited a huge chunk of cash from his dad, and
lived like a king until he had to crank up the medicine show, so to speak. One
of my favorite essays is a letter to Henry Ford, asking the philanthropist to
help him institute what has become known today as "guidance counseling" for
young people: helping them to find their greatest aptitude so that no effort in
pursuing powerful goals would be unnecessarily wasted.
The thing is, like most wizards, he had to rely on iconoclastic style to tell
him which of his admirers was worthy of one-on-one instruction, and which just
wanted to turn Alchemy into one more enabling force for the politics of ego and
tribe. Calling Crowley a fraud is simply to declare ones inability to
understand the data he left to us in encrypted form. If you practice Hermetic
magic, as in the Greek papyri found in Egypt, his clues are invaluable.
It is funny how people like to throw the word, Satanist, around. Anton LaVey
declared that it is simply a more honest system of practicing what the vast
majority of people practice beneath a hypocritical veneer: self interest.
Others, like his student, Dr. Michael Aquino, declare it to be a devotion to the
Great God Set. "I have taken the path of Set past the messengers of Osiris, for
I am Thoth, strongest of the gods."
Working on a system whereby one may see the type of thing in the Harry Potter
stories in ones own experience was a preoccupation with the ancient Egyptians.
I think it is impossible to understand their value system without understanding
this phenomenon, to some extent. Khety told Merikare that Ra invented HkAw so
that man might be able to participate in the resistance of evil. Actually,
Crowley preached extensively against sorceries that were unduly selfish. But,
he had to use drama in order to weed out the people who were not serious about
the study and practice of Hermetic mysticism and thaumaturgy.
