I went searching and found this thought provoking article:

It seems to me what all dark paths have in common is that the participants, using magick as they often do, to some degree need to stay clear of or protected from those who would prematurely judge and try to disrupt their power to do miraculous things, as with a photographic darkroom. Yet whether one is into magick or simply alternative religion, some kind of aesthetic statement has to be made in order to attract like minded folk; and it has to express some of the frustrated worthiness of tribes like emo boys or such.
