I think Prof. Snape put it quite well in one of the Harry Potter stories. The topic was Defense Against the Dark Arts. He said in clarification of a comment made by the acting teacher of the class, "Block...unfriendly...spells...!"
If we allow someone who practices black magick regularly and skillfully to drag us down into their emotional ghetto, we are much easier to overwhelm and plunder. Best to stay objective and in a spiritually elevated state. The upper grades of Magister Templi, Magus, and Ipsissimus require the adept to be able to dissolve any hate in a moment in order to see the greatest number of options to the incoming attack. Someone who wants to "get your goat" should not be afforded the pleasure. It's like the guy on Bourbon St. who says, "I know where ya got dem shooze!" It isn't worth breaking your stride over unless you are in the mood for a brief, silly adventure.
