Posted by Sarasvati Fautheree When it comes to fear, one thing that has helped me--whether it's psychological or magickal is up for grabs--is the habit of "smudging" my home every month, concentrating on making the portals to my home (windows, doors, mirrors) into "filters" of sorts, diffusing and rendering harmless the negative energy i sometimes bring in from work (urg!) and pulling positive, healing earth energy into the house. Aromatherapy has worked for me--consult any good aromatherapy book for any of the dozens of combos you could try--and if i drink a large glass of chamomile tea when i start having a panic attack, i've noticed that the attack doesn't last as long, though it's still intense and painful. Another HUGE help is learning what stimuli, if any, tend to set off your problems, and avoid that stimuli when possible. Cognitive therapy techniques--such as talking to yourself as if you're on the outside looking in, as saying "you know that physically you are safe at this moment, and you know that this will pass"--seem to help as well. personally, i've found that it's best to attack a problem of this type from several angles, with several tools. One of the things that works for physical pain for me is that, rather than trying to stop feeling it at all, I have learned how to dissociate from it to a certain degree--for me, the worst part of physical pain is what it does to my emotions and state of mind, not what it does to my body (if that makes any sense). To that end, through self-hypnosis and through learning how to "grin and bear it", one of the things that has helped was to realize, really deeply realize, that physical pain is of the body, and to separate myself psychologically from my body during times of great physical stress. For instance, during a tooth abcess, i kept trancing out, used aromatherapy (clary sage, bergamot, lavender mix), and disengaged myself emotoinally from what was happening to my body until i could get to the dentist to get some help. Since then i have also increased my pain tolerance through deep stretching, vigorous exercise, etc--but obviously, if you consider that, be cautious and don't push your body too far or do anything too crazy. however, you may also want to look into self-hypnosis--i've heard of people who are so strong at controlling their own states of consciousness and their own bodies that they can literally go through surgery with no anesthetic as long as they are tranced out. obviously, try this with SMALL pains at first.

As someone who has suffered from PTSD, panic attacks, major car wrecks, and impacted, infected wisdom teeth--among many other things--all i can tell you are some of the things that have worked for me. They may sound wonky, but if you're comfortable with trying them, go for it--if it's not right for you, feel free to discard it.
