Also attack those with a larger overall number of troops, that effects the amount of gold you get. Like say your attack rating is higher but he has more troops, beat the hell out of him and take his gold.
I just kicked ass this morning, I'm raising my covert skill sky-high, I'm at like level 5 or 6, which is dramatically raising my Sentries and Spies.
