Well, I am not so up on the 3 series, so I might not be the best person to ask about head swaps for this particular motor. I have seen a few examples of transplants, other bigger engines going into this body style, which makes for a faster ride.
Aside from that, I would say that you need to research the matter as much as possible before you dig into things. Perhaps you have heard something from another source, which is why you want to do this in the first place. What did you hear? If someone else did this and had fantastic results, then that is a good start.
I've said this many times: one of the most overlooked performance gains on any engine is the GEARING! A simple gear change can put more smiles on you face and bring more out of an engine than most would imagine.
