The head has to come off to replace the rocker. There might also be other damage that is not yet visable. BMW has a special tool to remove the rocker shafts (there are four shafts, two for the intake and two for the exhaust and they must be put back together right else you could starve your cam of oil). The said tool is cheap and will remove the rocker shafts without messing up the shaft bores in the head. I would advise getting a manual and follow the step by step instructions, that is, if you are so inclined; or have a shop do it. This is by no means and easy job.
