Oh, I realize there is much more to it than just bolting the engine in. I never had that illusion. This project is still in the brainstorming phase, but I'm pretty sure I want to go with the M30, due to its relatively high availability, relatively low price, and good performance and reliability. I was planning on going with the e34 head and intake, because I believe they flow a bit better, and I was planning on getting a fairly lumpy cam, and I'm even considering some sort of aftermarket fuel-injection system, albeit probably a MegaSquirt.
Basically, I was just curious what years and models of the 5, 6, and 7 series cars had the oversquare engines, or at least the short-stroke cranks. I appreciate your input thus far.
