Posted by Zane It seems to me that the power potential of most of the earlier bmw six cylinders is just beginning to become realized. In my case, there was no "blue print" or "recipe" to follow, like the GN crowd or the Supra crowd. In any case, I've heard of few killer M5's around and, no doubt, with enough money, anything is possible. The problem with the S38 motor is that the pin-pointed, specific, detailed design of this particular engine revolves around natural aspiration. Anything done to upset this balance crashes everything else. Then, in order to get it right, one finds themselves redesigning an entire engine or chasing their tail--probably why most abandoned these projects--Corky Bell, Gene Liu, to name a few. The key word in your note is reliability, which I have always stressed is the main player in any performance recipe. Most do not get this point. Although they do appear to have a bad ass motor, reliability is out the window. The real quest comes in being in full control of those explosions, like on the interstate or going to the grocery store.

Hi Danny,
Aside from all this, I really don't know your intentions, or your "vision". If you do intend to go forced induction, you have seen some of the pricing, which is, no doubt, a mind trip. Try some NOS first. A friend of mine runs this on his bone stock Six, gets 430 HP (witnessed both pulls by TPS Motorsports). The car is dependable, idles nice and smooth and is, in all practical purposes, reliable as hell. The only draw back here is in keeping the bottles full because it is like a drug....more, more, more :o)
