I'm working on a 1985 325e that won't shift into ANY gear, running or not. Prior to this, the vehicle once or twice refused to immediately shift into reverse but the clutch plate felt healthy, no obvious slippage. Now when I press the clutch it feels normal, but it won't shift. When I gently apply enough force to the shifter with the engine running, I feel the car barely trying to move in the correct direction but it still won't shift.
I have visually examined the 'bell-housing external' parts of the clutch linkage. I'm a bit confused 'cause the Haynes (don't beat me!!) manual shows an external slave cylinder, and if the car has a hydraulic clutch, the slave cylinder has to be 'internal' as all I could find were what looked like two hydraulic lines terminating in what looked to be pressure fittings on the side of the bell housing.
With a friend pushing the pedal, I heard squeaking, like a spring, or in my opinion, specifically a pressure plate spring, apparently coming from the bell housing.
Does this sound like just a bad clutch?
