who sang the song Cars

I had the "45" back in the 80's that had Cars on one side and Metal on the other and I just heard Cars being played on the Today show and my fiance' and I can't figure out who sang it. He is trying to tell me that it is Billy Idol and I absolutely know that it isn't, so I need to know who it actually is. Thank you in advance.
