I met the great man somewhere around circa late 1970's.I knew his second wife,MARCELLE from the early sixties, when she was an actress, when I photographed her for the London Evening Standard at the time.
The next I had a telephone call from her one day saying she was now married to Alistair-and would I like to do some book jacket pictures for them, must have been around the BEAR ISLAND period.
They were staying in London at the time-but the whole thing was like out of one of his novels,secrecy..would I not tell a soul where he was staying and swallow the address on the piece of paper...why,because his life was made a misery by Fleet Street who were camped on his doorstep.
I can remember him saying to me,life was hell where you could'nt go out in the street.
That day he ordered chicken from the local take away-all done in a 'cat & mouse' style by his wife.
He said to me "forget etiquette,Horace, eat with your fingers" he was a lovely man,so down to earth,Yet like all great writers lead a very private life!.Sadly missed by all including his late wife as well, who died of cancer.
