I, too, felt his "Americanization" took a toll on his captivating style. Nothing compares to his earlier stuff (ie. "HMS Ulysses," "Guns of Navarone," "Night Without End," and "Ice Station Zebra"). Although I still enjoyed his books that followed "Goodbye California," they lacked the er of the originals. I did enjoy his short story collection though. When MacLean wrote of the sea, his words came alive.
