I found "The Secret Ways" in sixth grade, devoured it, read "The Guns of Navarone" next and became a devoted fan. My sister, brother, father, and friends at school all followed in my reading trail. MacLean's humor, suspense, and incredible descriptions of increment weather ("Night Without End" and "Ice Station Zebra" come to mind) are incredible. Does any modern writer come close in these areas?
