This is an interesting site. My grandfather William Murray, was Alistair Maclean's Head of Department when he was a teacher. My grandfather was also a writer (un published) and he encouraged Maclean to enter his first short story into the competition which he won. We have a lot of correspondance from Alistair Maclean where he apologises for his poor writing and trys to persuade my grandfather to get published. Maclean did not seem to think much of the books he wrote, he would have preferred to write more serious stuff I think. We have lots of first editions where Alistair has written comments like, please don't tell me what you think of this because it is terrible. It seems a shame that he did not think much of books that have given pleasure to so many.
