Posted by Bicycle Bill Ice Station Zebra, on the other hand, *does* seem to fit the bill better. The biggest discrepancy is that the 'hero' arrives by submarine, not aircraft. OTOH, both of these books were written something like 30 years ago, and there have been a lot of other writers, ranging from Cussler, Clancy, and Brown to several hundred other authors who published one book and were quickly forgotten, plowing somewhat the same field. Perhaps it's something from one of these 'look-alike' writers that you recall. Good luck with your search, however.

I disagree; although Night Without End takes place in the Arctic, it begins when an airliner crashlands near a weather station occupied by the protagonists. The rest of the story (if I remember correctly) concerns rescuing the survivors; separating the good guys from the bad guys; and getting the good guys away from the bad guys and off to the coast from where they can be rescued.
