My reading skills in college were wanting. After college I made a point to do more reading. I, too, was hooked on Alistair MacLean's novels and read about 2/3 of them. His later works seemed to me to include more emphasis on drinking by the main characters and, I suspected that it must be a reflection of the author's preoccupation. Nevertheless, I loved all his novels.
