I work in for a school district and do a very small amount of work for a private therapy company after school and in the summer. I've had a few parents of children I see at school ask if I would be willing to see their children privately as well.
I generally say something along the lines of, "I'm honored that you value the services that I provide your child at school. I also value the relationship I have with you and your child and am flattered that you have asked me to be your child's private ST provider. Unfortunately, it would be a conflict of interest for me to see your child privately. I would be happy to provide you with a list of private providers in our area that I regularly collaborate with."
I then provide a fairly extensive list of providers in our area, including some that work for the same private company and some who do not. I have had some parents press me for an explanation of why seeing their child privately would be a conflict of interest. In those cases, I explain that the criteria for school services is different from that for private services and that my judgement could be unintentionally influenced by my dual relationship with the parent and child in either setting.
I hope this helps. Good luck!
