I am finding that there is enormous stress, anxiety, and also sadness developing in my day to day life in working with children with Autism. The desire to help and to improve their deficits is probably universal, but I am wondering if the emotional drain is just me or if other SLP's are affected. Why aren't the school districts preparing us for the emotional issues, the grieving, the issues that we, the therapists, are encountering. The parents need counseling, but so do we. As I read about how some of you are burned out, are leaving the field, etc. etc., it seems that if we had a twice yearly counseling group that directly taught us how to cope better we might avoid some of the stress. I do hope to hear from some of you, and am serious about this issue. Thank you.
