Things must be different in different places, because here, the standard is to go by the total language score. However, I do know what you mean about those with peaks and valleys in the subtest scores, but one of the criteria here is: the language difficulty can not be the result of another disorder. Autism and learning disability both have language deficits but aren't pure language disorders for example.
Her educational need is math. She has occasional behavior problems, can be inattentive but otherwise the teacher feels she needs academic support, not speech/language support. I reviewed the reports on her today and the previous SLP also gave her an auditory processing test that is intended for adolescents and adults. The psychologist reports shows a pattern of strengths and weaknesses so I am not sure why they did not find her eligible for a learning disability.
But maybe an indirect model would be a good idea if the team decides to keep her on a communication disorder rather than a learning disability.
