I generally find out when each class has language arts and math, in addition to specials, and then make a "draft" schedule that I confirm with the teacher. My draft always needs to be adjusted before I have final copy, but I've found asking teachers their preference becomes overwhelming, especially with a large caseload. Using this method, I am also able to group similar students together.
