Do you need the benefits? If you have benefits through your spouse, then I guess vacation time and having enough work to pay your bills would be your biggest concerns. When I worked in the schools and transitioned to a SNF setting, I did need to continue benefits. I wasn't concerned about the summers off, because I usually did EYS services and even taught summer school for two summers. I have to admit, I make A LOT more money in the SNF (about $30,000 more); I am full time there and recently gave up doing home health PRN. I do have some trouble getting time off due to coverage issues, but recently a PRN SLP was hired, so I'm happy about that. If you are willing to work part-time at the schools, you may get the best of both worlds. One thing I noticed in the schools with p/t SLPs: they always seemed to work more hours than they were supposed to (but don't we all in the schools?!).
