I am a preschool sped teacher and I have a student who is 3 years-old and has Autism. I am VERY perplexed by his communication style. He verbalizes only through a closed-mouth. He is able to label, make simple comments, and say short sentences, but he never opens his lips. He has the correct intonation and syllables for each word, but everything sounds like a “hum”. When he tries to say a word with an “s” or “f” (like “slide” or “fish”) he blows air out through his nose. He is able to eat and drink normally, even uses a straw and does not drool. When working with him to try to make sounds, he is occasionally able to open his mouth, but then no sound will come out. The only open-mouth sounds he has been able to say are: “ah” and “uh, uh” (as if to tell someone “no, no”) but even these sounds are inconsistent. My SLP and I (as well as this little one’s parents) are stumped. Any/all ideas are appreciated!
