I guess it depends on what they need to work on. For example, I have a child with Down's now that I see twice a week in a group of 2 to work on Cycles. I also see her an additional time in a group of 2 to work on language.
Frequency is important, but what can be more important is increasing the time you spend on a pattern. Hodson recommends 3/30 minute sessions per sound in the pattern for lower functioning kids (as opposed to 2/30 minute sessions). I have done it both ways and have seen progress both ways. I haven't really looked to see if progress was faster by targeting the sounds over three sessions as opposed to two.
For the child I have now, I am doing a typical Cycles approach where I target the sounds over 2 sessions and move on. I chose that because she has soooo many sounds to work on that I want to get through the entire Cycle by Christmas. The great thing is that she is stimulable for ALL of the sounds. We haven't had to skip any....yet!
