For the social language group-there are some good resources here in materials exchange-some conversation checklists, etc. under Social/Pragmatic.
I have also used a topic inventory. First brainstorm topics of interest to the group. They fill out a small sheet...name of each group member on left side going down the page, interests/topics across top (6-8)-kind of on a diagonal to fit. Then each student can check off if he would like to talk about each topic (makes a check on the line bearing his name). The group can then look at what topics they have in common and start with those that the most like and on down. In theory, each student will participate in high and low interest conversations over the next few weeks.
Then in subsquent lunches, they review good rules of conversation and one gets to intro the first topic, etc.
Sorry, I cannot find the source for this checklist that I got online and adapted.
I've also used a Super Duper material "Social Inferences." Each card gives a situation and the students tell what they would do or selects the appropriate answer to the question posed at the end of the short paragraph.
