I have a student (3rd grade) who is an ESL student in many ways. He also receives learning support, but is being dropped to consult and ESL services are being increased. He speaks English, but I can tell by his sentence structure that his grammar and understanding of the language isn't quite up to par. He's usually close with his answers, often associating things to vocabulary when asked for a definition. I'm not sure if his native language is spoken at home or if English is incorporated at home as well.
What kinds of things do you think I should be targeting with him? Right now, I'm working on helping him describe similarities/differences of items (starting with just giving details, which is how I'm seeing that he's close, but not quite there). His sentence structure needs help, but I'm not familiar with how to structure teaching this to an ESL student.
Any suggestions?
