Here's my thoughts on RtI and speech/language. If you follow the standard protocol of RtI, a student goes into tier 2 and starts receiving interventions in a small group (6-8) for 30 minutes about 3 times a week for 6-8 weeks. If they don't show progress, you decrease the group size (2-3) and increase the frequency to 5 times a week for 6-8 weeks. So, the student is still not showing major gains so we consider Special education and an IEP. The child qualifies and we tell the parent we are going to give this child S/L services in a small group (2-3) for 30 min. twice a week in order to help their child. As a parent I would say "WHAT?" "How is my child going to make progress now when you've just decreased services? Don't do me any favors and keep my child out of Special Education and continue to give him/her interventions 5 times a week." RtI works for Reading, Writing, and Math as Special education gives them 90 minutes daily versus 30 minutes daily of tier 3 interventions. So I can substantiate Special Ed to a parent for those 3 areas as it gives them more than RtI. Has anyone else noticed this? However, I do agree that most kids will show progress and forego an IEP but not on a student with a severe disorder. And according to legislation, we must try interventions first - correct?
