I have an elective mute student this year. He's in 3rd grade. My partner takes students pre-gr 2. I get gr 3-8. She's had him since he was in preschool. Oh, how I was praying he'd be cured by now! Of course we'd exchange tips about students but this was a first for her and now for me. He was in ELL, but his last score indicates he's tested out. He talks at home and by the end of last year, he was whispering to his classroom teacher. His classroom teacher gave him the expressive part of the ELL test. He has never had direct s/L minutes, just consult minutes. He had been seeing an outside psychologist, but the family has dropped that. I am told by my s/L partner that he had made a friend in last year's 2nd grade and that they would be placed in the same classroom. They weren't. I had him and another 3rd grade student come to my room for a 'meet n greet'today. He makes eye contact, sometimes nods or shakes his head but would not talk. We played a game of Uno and when he had one card, I tried to good-naturedly get him to say "uno". When he didn't, I told him to just knock on the table, which he did. It so happened, that I know his older brother and sister, but couldn't recall her name. He wouldn't say it but when given paper and pencil, wrote it. I found a "How to Help a Selective Mute Child in the Classroom" article for his teacher. One of the things I hope we can work on is to get his classmates to stop saying "he doesn't talk" or talk for him! That's all I have! Should I be doing more? My feeling is to push for a district psych eval. PLEASE, any ideas? Thank you!
