Hello, to all you therapists...
I am a dental hygienist in DESPERATE need of a career change. I am so burned out, I can hardly stand going to work. I was doing some research about speech language pathology, and the field sounds quite challenging and rewarding--on paper. I was hoping that some of you may be able to give me some insight as to how things are "in the real world." When I was in school, the instructors actually told us that average burn out rate for hygienists was five years (why I didn't listen, I have no idea.) Is this commom for SLP's, a short amount of time before burn out occurs? Do you feel like the pay and the positive outcomes are worth the time and money spent in school? Are there any issues with licensing? Are there independent state boards that must be taken? How easy is it to transfer your license from state to state? (One of the more frustrating things about my field is that it can be quite difficult to practice in another state--many are 'independent' states that require their own practical board exam.)
Any other tidbits that you may think of would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for you responses. :)
