I worked in public schools for five years ranging from full time to part time and have worked the past two and a half years at a private clinic. I've loved my experience at the clinic, although I do miss the energy (kids love you no matter what) and satisfaction of the school caseload. Regarding your numbered items: 1) my caseload is as big as I want it and can work; the pay is better but not by much; I only work part time but this is my choice and there aren't benefits or vacation associated with this setting for me.
2) my employer sends me referrals I am comfortable with, which sound similar to your preferred population; if I don't feel I can work with a child I say 'no thanks' and she'll send me a different one
3) You may not know which setting is the best for you since you've just tried one, try out some of the other settings and decide where you fit the best
4) I'm not positive changing settings primarily based on finance would be the best thing as once you are in the private setting, you'd probably be paying for your own continuing ed in addition to materials.
Good luck!
