Push in = 2 scenarios....a. when child has skill but is not generalizing to reg ed classroom, b. when severity and nature of problems lend themselves to in-class, small group instruction. I love push in, but rarely get a chance to use it due to caseload size, # sites and workload. Incredibly effective IF you have a Reg Ed. teacher who works collaboratively with you vs. you acting as an IA or "sub". Takes a while...would recommend you start small, targeting one teacher who is open to idea. If all goes well, you will have to fight off your teachers with a bat. They'll all want you to do push in.
Pull out: a. when severity/type of Tx would make a child an instructional isolate in a public setting, b. unfortunately when your caseload size means you can't be in 2+ classrooms at the same time...so you have to form groups using pull out. All too often this is grounds for pull out vs. actual student needs.
good luck! If you get a chance to try push in, go for it. Be sure, however, to build in regularly scheduled collaboration TIME (put it on your schedule & make sure teacher does too) to prepare materials/discuss instruction with your reg ed teacher before the actual session...
