Hi friends,
I was wondering if any of you could help me with a particular case that I have been struggling with. I work with a 6th grade student who is an English Language Learner and has Childhood Apraxia of Speech. He has spent many of his school years outside of the U.S. He is at a Level 1 (beginning/preproduction) English proficiency. According to his parents, he is very vocal at home; however, he is quite reluctant to speak at school. He speaks mostly in one and two word utterances, and he speaks VERY softly. Even his friends who are also ELL have a difficult time understanding him. His speech and language goals this year have focused on increasing his MLU, increasing his volume of speech, CVC combinations, and using a communication notebook to communicate. He is also very reluctant to use his communication notebook, except when encouraged by his teacher or when he is truly in a bind to get his message across. He sometimes draws to communicate, but that takes way too long. He also has trouble with reading and is a poor speller. Math is an area of strength for him. I am VERY concerned about this student. At this time, he really doesn't have any reliable form of communication. Does anyone have suggestions for what I might try with him? I would appreciate any suggestions.
