Have you considered consultative until he is ready for the /r/? Honestly, he really should be ready for /r/ now being almost 7 (if he's in first grade, he should turn 7 or is 7 now). If you look at Eric Sander's norms, 50% of kids have /r/ at the age of three and the right side of the bar is where 90% of kids produce the sound appropriately, which is around 7;2 for this chart.
