The shoe box is just for storage. You might have the headline "Obama family gets dog". When he is read the title, he produces a sentence or comment(s) about this i.e. The president got a dog. The dog is black and white. It is a ______. The dog will sleep inside the white house. The children will walk him daily.
He develops little snippets of interesting and factual conversational speech. The reason you keep it in the shoebox, or other folder, is so you can review the old stories.
