Often children with social issues (as dx by Aspergers/Autism/PDD/etc.) DO have academic issues, they are just not quite as 'visible', especially since your child is still only 8 y.o. This is a link to an article that delinates some difficulties these kiddoes MAY have as they move from K into the older Elementary grades. I believe the author referenced a lot of Michelle Garcia Winner's info (you can google her). She (Garcia-Winner)talks a LOT about serving these kids. Also, I once saw her speak and she mentioned (almost as a last resort) to look at your school district's philosophy/motto, about what education "is" (often it will say something like educate every child so as to become a functional member of society, etc., etc., ) - you can use this as "ammo" since your son may not be "functional in society" if he cannot participate in group activities (so, how could he effectively get a job).
