Wow, people are crazy. Even if he had some type of speech problem before his surgery, you certainly won't be able to properly assess him or do anything until he has healed. Good grief, if he can't open his jaw what are you supposed to do! Will he be getting PT for his jaw? Offer to talk with him when he has completely recovered from surgery.
