I made up a "Broken Hearts" Valentine's game that can be used with ANY stimuli -- artic on any level, vocbab, grammar, you name it. And it doesn't take any time away from therapy (yea!).
Purchase 50-100 foam hearts (approx. 1 1/2" from your local craft store. On about 20% of the hearts, draw a black jagged line down the center to look like the heart is broken. Put all of the hearts in a sturdy red or pink gift bag. Give each student a small cup or container from the dollar store (so they don't keep playing with the hearts).
After each student takes a turn, he or she will reach into the bag and take out a heart. If the heart is unmarked, the student places it in his/her cup. If the heart is "broken," the student has to put ALL of the hearts from his/her cup back into the bag. The student with the most hearts at the end of the game wins.
I do a similar "Bankrupt" game around St. Patty's Day with plastic coins or foam shamrocks drawn from a drawstring bag. Some of the coins or shamrocks are blackened; when pulled from the bag, the student is bankrupt (pulling all coins or shamrocks back into the bag). Instead of cups for this game, I give each student a miniature plastic "pot" from Oriental Trading or some party stores (looks like a cauldron or a leprechaun's pot of gold).
I just love games like this that keep the kids motivated but don't reduce therapy time. And, believe it or not, the kids love these games (and don't seem to notice that it's the same game with different themes. :-)
