The student will be affected in the classroom because of his limited ways to communicate. He will be unable to ask questions,participate in group activities, develop social skills necessary enjoy the experiences the other, more verbal, students enjoy. In your professional role, as his SLP, you are his advocate. You have plenty of pragmatic goals as well as verbal.
